Welcome message from Congress Chair

Dear Colleagues and friends,
It is my pleasure to warmly welcome you to the 3rd Biennial Pan African Thoracic Society Congress and our first in-person meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic. Our theme this year, “The African Environment and Lung Health”, explores the effects of physical elements such as air pollution and climate change, and also social factors like poverty, overcrowding, and displacement on lung health in the African context. The workshops and plenary sessions will also include sub-themes exploring sustainable solutions and public health measures to improve lung health in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era.
Hosted in the beautiful coastal city of Mombasa, Kenya, this year’s conference promises to be exciting, and we encourage participants to take this opportunity to enjoy the tourist attractions the city offers. The program will feature distinguished speakers and experts in respiratory health and thoracic surgery. Some workshops and plenary sessions to anticipate this year include thoracic ultrasound, pulmonary rehabilitation, and the effect of the environment on lung function trajectories.
Following the success of the innovative Congress App introduced at our last conference, this conference will feature upgrades. We encourage participants to join the conversation online by joining our Facebook group and connecting with us on Twitter.
We are honoured to invite the scientific community in Africa and internationally to submit their abstracts for consideration. Our conference provides a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge and build connections and contribute to developing capacity and tackling global health challenges.
I am most grateful to the planning committee for their contributions to designing and organizing this educative and informative conference. It is because of their unwavering commitment to executing the vision of the Pan African Thoracic Society to unite African Thoracic societies, lead advocacy efforts, and share resources to improve the standards of practice in Africa, that this year’s conference is possible.
I am confident that this conference will be most enjoyable and look forward to hosting you.
Welcome!

Welcome message from PATS President

On behalf of the Organizing Committee for Pan African Thoracic Society 2023 Conference, it is my honor and privilege to invite you to participate in this prestigious Conference which will be held at the beautiful Coast City of Mombasa.
This is the third conference since Pan African Thoracic Society was actively constituted. The first conference was held in Nairobi in 2016 and the Second conference was in Durban, South Africa 2018. Unfortunately due to the Covid19 pandemic, there has been a lapse in holding the conferences.
It is a pleasure and honor for Respiratory Society of Kenya to co-host the conference again.
The Conference Theme “THE AFRICAN ENVIRONMENT AND LUNG HEALTH” has been carefully chosen to mark the current Lung Health situation in Africa.
Pan African Thoracic Society though formed earlier was generally dormant until 2013 during the Kenya National Lung Conference in Nairobi when it was reactivated. So 2023 marks ten years of PATS active existence. Over the last ten years, PATS members have made tremendous contributions to research, teaching, and practice in Lung health resulting in impacts in many sectors of the society. The conference will therefore serve as a continuation and a celebration of what PATS and lung health professional body have achieved. Additionally, a future vision must be to strive to create better lung health in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This conference will therefore give us the opportunity to share our thoughts and to exchange ideas on how to chart our journey forward to make Africa Breath Better.
We have an exciting programme put together by our scientific committee that will allow members to reflect upon and celebrate some of our past accomplishments and give us a chance to renew friendships and extend our network and jointly explore current and future activities to promote Lung Health in Africa. We hope that all participants will have a productive and fun-filled time at this very special conference.
To put up a conference of this magnitude together is not a small task. Only those who have experienced the organization of such an important event and its related actions will understand how much human effort goes into the preparation for these three days of intense activity, making the conference most memorable. I take this opportunity to appreciate all the committee members and staff for their contribution and commitment, I would also like to thank our partners for their financial support.
Lastly, we would like to thank all of the conference participants for their contributions which are the foundation of this conference
You can expect a very stimulating, fruitful, and enjoyable time in Mombasa. We look forward to welcoming you to Kenya for the 3rd PATS Conference

Welcome message from ReSoK President

The Respiratory Society of Kenya is greatly honoured and privileged to host the third PATS Conference and welcomes you all to the historical City of Mombasa which is a cauldron of different cultures and languages. Our vision in the Respiratory Society of Kenya is to be the leading reference organization providing world-class lung health solutions within our borders and beyond. We engage in partnerships with governmental agencies, international organisations, and Private entities to engage in advocacy, conducting value-adding research, promoting innovation and education in our communities, and training of healthcare providers. We work with and support different entities that seek to primarily enhance lung health and public health in general. We believe this conference, which is so aptly themed, will contribute in no small way towards our mission. We look forwards to forging closer ties with PATS and other member Societies towards our shared goals and aspirations, including and not limited to PATS-MECOR, Respiratory Specialist, and other Allied support training Programs, and initiatives that improve Lung Health, in general.
The World Health Organization estimates that 99% of the global population inhales air that is polluted beyond its guidelines, and we in low- and middle-income countries have the highest exposure. A healthy Environment is central to a healthy society, and as Respiratory care professionals, we, unfortunately, bear the brunt of diseases that directly result from an unhealthy environment. Poor air quality, pollution of different elements, and poor hygiene, in general, continue to drive morbidity and mortality in our world, and PATS must pool our collective minds, harness our collective efforts to influence policy, identify and provide pertinent training and education programs, dictate research questions and synergise multilateral resources that all work towards a healthier environment and a healthier society.
Like other coastal communities along the Indian Ocean, Mombasa has a lot to offer in history, culture, and entertainment and we hope that you shall find time to sample our eclectic cuisine, beautiful beaches. and a lot more that Kenya has to offer.
